‘An MLA, one pension’ scheme approved by Guv, says Mann, ‘will save big on taxes’ | Latest News India

The program aims to save the AAP government in Punjab millions by ensuring only one disbursement is made to one legislature.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said Saturday that Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s One MLA, One Pension scheme has been approved. With the program, the AAP government wants to save millions.

“I am extremely pleased that the Governor has approved the One MLA, One Pension Bill. The government has issued a notice. It will save a lot of taxes,” Mann said in a tweet. The update comes about three months after the state cabinet passed the bill.

The new system aims to remove payouts based on the number of terms an MLA has served. HT had previously reported that the government expects a saving of 19 crore with it.

Previously, MLAs received separate payouts for each term they served, which changes with the governor’s approval.

In May, the Punjab Cabinet approved an amendment to the Punjab Legislature (Pension and Medical Facilities Regulation) Act 1977 to meet a long-standing demand.

The Aam Aadmi party, elected with a huge mandate in the February/March state elections, had said it would not let the VIP culture thrive.

It previously downgraded the security of hundreds of VIPs. The move, however, drew heavy criticism with the death of convention leader and singer Sidhu Moosewala.
